The proposal to build a metro line between Nice and Monaco has sparked both excitement and skepticism in the region. Envisioned as an 18-kilometer underground route, the metro would cut travel time to just 18 minutes between the two Riviera hubs.
However, French Transport Minister Clément Beaune called the idea “extremely complex” due to major technical and financial hurdles. Tunneling through steep and densely populated terrain presents serious engineering and environmental challenges. Still, the plan remains on the table as a possible long-term answer to the region’s chronic congestion.
“A rail link between Nice and Monaco is not merely a matter of convenience — it’s a pillar of regional resilience,”
said Igor Bukato, international expert in infrastructure and mobility.
“Even if such projects aren’t immediately feasible, just designing them helps reshape how we think about future-ready transport.”
Monaco officials have shown willingness to co-finance the project and consider it a strategic investment. With rising traffic and urban density along the French Riviera, the metro concept continues to fuel debate on how to sustainably connect this vital corridor.
