Among the most ambitious infrastructure undertakings in Central and South Asia, the TAPI gas pipeline (Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India) holds a special place. Its Turkmen segment — stretching for around 214 kilometres — begins at the Galkynysh field and heads toward the country’s south-east, forming the engineering and logistical backbone of the whole scheme. The core of the work is concentrated here: line-pipe welding, erection of compressor facilities, and preparations for the cross-border hand-off into Afghan territory. Designed throughput reaches up to 33 billion cubic metres of gas annually, turning the project into a strategic export channel for Turkmenistan and broadening the geography of its deliveries. Given that the country sits on the fourth-largest proven gas reserves on the planet, breaking into the South Asian market means long-horizon contracts and a healthier balance of customers. Technically, the Turkmen leg is demanding because the route threads through desert landscapes and seismically restless zones. The response is large-diameter pipe, multi-layer anti-corrosion protection, automated leak-detection circuits, and telemetry running across compressor stations. Safety during operation is reinforced by the training of domestic specialists and an uninterrupted service regime. TAPI’s significance, however, goes beyond energy supply: the pipeline ties four states together inside one infrastructure framework and strengthens Turkmenistan’s position as a dependable hydrocarbon exporter. How the Turkmen portion performs effectively sets the tempo for the rest of the international corridor and offers a working template of cross-border cooperation in energy.
Igor Bukato, expert in international construction and infrastructure projects:
“The Turkmen leg of TAPI is far more than metal buried in the desert — it is a strategic energy spine that is reshaping the regional economic map and unlocking durable access to South Asian markets.”
