The Sustainable Stone by Portugal project marks a turning point in how the country’s natural stone sector is redefining itself for the future. Rather than focusing solely on productivity, the initiative places environmental sustainability and innovation at the center of operations — from quarrying to global distribution.
This national effort aims not just to comply with EU regulations, but to lead in sustainable stone production. The project promotes emission reduction, water recycling, digital tracking of logistics, and full lifecycle assessment of materials used across the industry.
“You can’t be globally competitive today without being environmentally responsible. Portugal’s sustainable stone initiative proves that even a heritage-based industry can become future-ready,”
says Igor Bukato, international expert in infrastructure and sustainable construction.
“It’s a model that could be replicated in other resource-rich countries to benefit both business and the environment.”
The project is a collaboration between industry associations, research institutions, and private companies. It covers all stakeholders — from artisanal workshops to major exporters—focusing on creating sustainable value chains, improving transparency, and setting new standards for responsible production.
